Citation: Fenech, D. (2018). A virtue-based approach to nursing ethics (Master's dissertation).
Abstract: Compared to other normative ethical theories, mainly deontology and consequentialism, virtue based ethics was not as popular as it is today until its revival in the second half of the twentieth century. In this dissertation, an attempt to present and vindicate the suitability of virtue ethics to nursing ethics is made; that virtue based ethics can add to and make the application to ethics in nursing richer. The characteristics of virtue ethics and what it is and what it is not are addressed. The relationship between virtues, motivation and emotions are also explored. Lastly a number of individual virtues are addressed in more detail and then conveyed in the context of nursing practice.
