Abstract: | Published under the Life & Well-being segment, the article maps the migratory history between Malta & Canada. The slow trickle of migration that began in the 19th century sped up considerably during the years immediately after the war. This article is written in commemoration of that wave which set the standard for Maltese emigrants 70 years ago. It discusses the official agreements made between the Canadian and Maltese government authorities, the rules and preferences of the Canadian market, i.e: restrictions to open migration, prospective emigrants to have law abiding characteristics, to join the skilled workforce, etc. The latter half of the article looks at how the ships occupants bid farewell to their loved ones and homeland, maps the route taken by the vessels, and how and where they settled in their new destination. It features a collection of black & white photographs. |
