Abstract: | This qualitative study explores the parents' perceived experience of the assessment process, diagnosis and support of their child with dyslexia. An in depth interview is conducted with four parents of children with dyslexia to gain insight on their experience before, during and after their child's assessment. Consequently emerging themes highlighted emotional response to the diagnosis, and the parents' adjustment to the circumstances. In the study, parents view the assessment as a source of guidance and support. However the parents report minimal understanding of the assessment and some lack of parental involvement during the procedure. It was also evident that the education system lacked assets from the social model and of a universal design for learning. Despite this the parents adopted ways to accept, cope and assist their children. |
