Abstract: In 1550, a legal dispute between priest Andrew Axach and Mrs. Ventura Xerri erupted over the possibility that the Church of St. Mary in Siggiewi was built by Xerri's ancestors. Axach argued that the church fell under his predecessor's jurisdiction while Xerri attempted to prove her ancestors' influence in the construction of the church as well as asserting that it lay within the boundaries of the city of Malta and not of Siggiewi. Busuttil also included extracts (written in Latin) that reveal the method by which the "baulia" functioned.
