Abstract: In order to address the much debated question which constitutes the title of my article, I have chosen the form of a medieval quaestio, i.e. a dialectical procedure in which an attempt is made to reconcile conflicting viewpoints. I believe this scholastic method offers both the writer and the reader the possibility for a rational engagement with the issue at hand.
