| Abstract: | On the 10th of June 1887, as the British Empire at large was celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, the ancient town of Rabat at the very heart of Gozo was officially declared a city and its name changed to Victoria. A petition states the title of Victoria as the city of Gozo incorporated Rabat, the Cittadella and all the surrounding localities, thus literally creating a new bigger city called Victoria. According to the author, the Gozitans themselves had 'supplicated' her to honour them by accepting to rename the new city after her. |
