Abstract: This dissertation aims to explore the perspectives of University students regarding phobias. The study qualitatively seeks to understand how today’s youth view individuals who suffer from phobic disorder, and to note their beliefs on the treatments available. Currently, there is not much literature available which is dedicated to youth’s beliefs about phobias. Locally, very few studies on phobias have been conducted, with none specifically looking at external perspectives. This work intends to expand on the available literature and inspire education on phobias, as well as mental health illness in general. Two focus groups, each involving four students attending the University of Malta, were held to discuss the topic. Copies of a self-designed individual questionnaire were also passed around and analysed to note any changes in responses. The data was analysed using Thematic Analysis (TA), where striking themes and sub-themes relevant to the research question were analysed. The results showed that the participants did have a general understanding of phobias, yet only those with a background in psychology knew of the treatments available. A deeper understanding of phobias was lacking, therefore improvements on education surrounding the topic may prove to be beneficial.
