dc.description.abstractThe aim of this study is to explore how children with Autism Spectrum Disorder respond to music. This small scale study used a qualitative approach to understand the perspectives of five parents whose children attend music sessions or lessons. Data from interviews with five mothers of children with ASD was analysed, using the Thematic Analysis (TA) method, which yielded four main themes to highlight how music has influenced the lives of the participants‟ children. The findings supports literature which suggest music offer a communication tool allowing children with ASD to express their emotions and their feelings in the absence of words. According to the participants, who interestingly were all mothers, music can accommodate social interaction, motor skills and appropriate behaviour. The different musical skills and abilities provide successful experiences for children with ASD. Through music, the children gained confidence, self-esteem, and acquired knowledge and new skills. The participants‟ narratives demonstrate the potential which music has in aiding children with ASD improve their sense of belonging and live a more meaningful and joyful life.en_GB
