| dc.description.abstract | Ignatius of Loyola was first approached to open a college in Malta by Bishop Domingo Cubelless (1540-66) in 1533. Conscious of Malta's great potential as a bridge in establishing contact between mainland Europe and the Muslim countries of the Maghreb, Ignatius approved the request. He planned to send Fr. Nicholas Bobadilla to make the preliminary arrangements, but Fr. Bobadilla never reached Malta because a quarrel ensued between the bishop and the Knights of St. John. | en_GB |
