Abstract: In spite of its size, Malta is deemed to be the third most densely populated Island State in the world, with a population of over 404,000 occupying an area of 216 sq. km. Its historic capital city, Valletta and its suburban conurbation have more than 250,000 inhabitants, generating environmental noise, primarily traffic noise. Although a relatively new member of the European Union since 2004, Malta must establish noise maps covering these areas to come in stream with other EU member states accordingly. This paper evaluates the pros and cons of setting up such noise standards for such a small Island State, given its outdoor lifestyle, practically all year round, in the context of its Mediterranean Climate and the ever flourishing tourist industry, bringing with it associated noise levels from airport and cruise liner activity as well as all-night outdoor entertainment.
