Abstract: | This dissertation focused on uncovering the positive and challenging experiences endured by parents of children with a profile of dyslexia pertaining schooling, support and self-esteem. This study employed a qualitative approach, namely thematic analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. The data obtained were audio-recorded utilising semistructured interviewing with four participants. The major results were categorised into four themes: diagnosis of dyslexia, the educational experience, adjusting and self-esteem along with sub-themes. These themes were discussed along with the relevant literature. This study shows the impact that several social agents hold in the lives of parents and children particularly educators, peers and community. The parents’ perspective of their child having dyslexia has a direct effect on the development of self-esteem, educational skills and talents (Heiman, 2002). |
