Abstract: The purpose of this study is to discover the perceptions that adults with intellectual disability have about friendships. Research has shown how adults with intellectual disabilities do have a concept of friendship and refers to a friend as someone who exhibits gratitude, companionship, support and affection (Matheson, Olson & Weiner, 2007). Moreover, friendships of adults with intellectual disabilities have been found to be characterised by limited friendships and a lack of interpersonal relationships. Eight participants with intellectual disabilities were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. The researcher opted for a qualitative methodology and data was collected and Thematic Analysis was used. Four themes have emerged from the collection of data. Findings revealed how persons with intellectual disability view a friend as an individual who helps, supports, loves and offers companionship. Friendship features that assist in friendship formation and maintenance, as well as the aspect of loneliness have also been identified. This study will contribute to an understanding of friendships in the local context.
