The Council of Nicea declared compulsory the opening of hospitals as a Christian duty (1). Christ was called "iatros" because he healed the sick. The Saints followed in Christ's footsteps. Nineteen centuries ago Paul the Apostle was shipwrecked at Malta, and healed the aged father of Publius. This event has been recorded in the Acts of the Apostles by Luke the Evangelist, who had studied medicine and was with Paul at Malta. To Luke is dedicated Malta's main hospital.en_GB
