Demographic review of the Maltese Islands for the year 1977

Abstract

The present issue of the Demographic .Review provides data .on Population and Vital Statistics for 1977. The comparative as well as the detailed tables in the Review follow the same pattern as those provided in previous issues. These tables are, as usual, preceded by a short commentary on the main demographic features for 1977, which were:- (a) a sustained upward trend in the Maltese Population resulting mainly from the higher number of returning migrants than that of outgoing migrants, (b) a resumption of the rising trend in the number of births and the birth rate following their decline in 1976, (c). a downturn in the number of deaths and death rates following their rise in 1975 and 1976, and (d) a sustained rise in the number of marriages, so that the high level in the rates of marriages in evidence -since 1972 was retained.
