Demographic review of the Maltese Islands for the year 1974

Abstract

Apart from updating the statistical series provided in previous years to the year 1974, this issue of the Demographic Review includes for the first time information on births by occupation and age of father. As in 1973, the data and rates of vital statistics for 1974 generally refer to the Maltese population. Up to 1972, the data refer to the total population. The main demographic features for 1974 described in this brief commentary were:- a sustained marginal reduction in the Maltese population reflecting an excess in the outflow of temporary visitors over the previous year ; an increase in the number of marriages in 1974 over the already high number of marriages in 1973 ; a sharp rise in births and a reduction of deaths and a decrease in net permanent migration.
