Abstract: There has been much needed progress in all branches of education during the past few years. The Royal University, the chief centre for higher education in the island has received important grants quite recently from the Colonial Welfare and Development Funds. £120,000 was allotted for a new Science block, and this building which will be named after the late Principal L. Ifor Evans, a good friend of the University, is well nigh completed. The sum of £10,000 has been made available for the University Library and a small sum for adult education to finance the publishing of books in Maltese. The Colonial Office has also allocated £1,0'00 per year from the Colonial Welfare Development Funds for a period of three years towards the salary of a new Professor of English, who started work during the present session.
