Abstract: | Until delivery, the foetus lives a parasitic existence. The placenta "breaths, digests and excretes" for the foetus and permits the vital functions of respiration and digestion to remain latent. At the moment of delivery, the infant is launched on an independent existence and assumes these vital functions or dies. This necessitates profound physiological changes in the infant, often based on anatomical alterations, immediately following the traumatic experience of birth. |
