Issue Date: 2011
Abstract: Milk is the first food source given to children, as it is very nutritious and the only suitable form of edible food for infants. The importance of milk increases in several life stages; especially in childhood, were children experience a rapid growth spurt and skeletal development. Yet, studies have shown that local consumption of milk is low in this age group. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the knowledge senior primary school children have about milk and contributory factors leading to low milk consumption in this age group. By investigating these contributory factors that are leading to a lower consumption of milk in senior Years 4 to 6, through a sample of 200 questionnaires distributed to eight Maltese State Primary schools, the author will determine reasons for this unhealthy trend. Through observations, the researcher will identify the distribution of milk procedures adopted in Maltese State Primary schools. Focus group interviews with northern and southern pupils will also be conducted to explore their present nutritive knowledge on milk. As a final project within this research to promote the consumption of milk, the researcher will design and produce a class-based promo and other resources to encourage the consumption of milk amongst senior primary school children.
