Abstract: | A door is doubly symbolic: while denoting man's right of possession to property and privacy when closed, it proclaims his hospitality and comradeship when opened. The gates of a city bear out these points and the traveler entering feels no longer an ignored stranger but a welcome guest of the citizens who have thrown wide open their doors to admit him. All cities should have gates and as no gate can be conceived of without a guardian, all cities should have protectors. Doors of necessity must be built in walls, therefore the gated city must be enclosed. in fortifications, and since such would serve little purpose if built low, they should be of sufficient height and width to make them unscaleable and impregnable and command a view for miles. Such a city is Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta. |
