Education is a major area of social investigation and has featured in the research and teaching of major sociologists over the years. Emile Durkheim, Karl Mannheim, Pierre Bourdieu, Basil Bernstein and Dorothy E. Smith are among the most prominent. It has also given rise to a major subset of the sociological field: Sociology of Education. Research in and on education features prominently in the internationally published sociological literature on Malta. In this chapter, we provide a sociological overview of education in Malta with due attention devoted to issues of social difference and biodiversity, with a final focus on the most recent (at the time of writing) allembracing Malta educational policy document placed in the public domain.en_GB
