Abstract: New times call for new ideas. Now that the European Common Market has been launched successfully, Malta finds itself gripped with the necessity of joining this body as a solution to its grave economic problems, the more so that the island can no longer depend on continued British help. Furthermore, Malta's future policy is one of independence within the framework of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Of course formerly, Malta could only join the Common Market indirectly through Britain's entry into the European Community. Today, however, once the island has asked for Independence it is in an entirely different position. Indeed, Malta has asked. and has already been given consent by Britain to seek membership of the Market, of its own free will.
