The Imnarja races have been held in Malta for more than 400 years, interrupted only by wars and epidemics. Horse-racing under recognised international rules started much later, but as Malta's racecourse at the Marsa was inaugurated in 1867, it still makes racing Malta's oldest organised sport, for football on a league basis as we know it today did not make an appearance for more than two decades.en_GB
