Abstract: Trade Unions had so far been limited in outlook and so failed to establish a solid basis. Furthermore, the trade union leaders had also failed to convince the workers that something substantial could be obtained by these associations. This is where the General Workers' Union succeeded, ably aided by Reggie Miller's charisma and courage, because he exploited the situation to the full and convinced the workers that they could rely on the new union.
