Abstract

Evidence to support the contention that entrepreneurial sense has never been lacking in the Maltese, in so far as concerns general commercial activity, is abundant in the Archives of St. John in the Royal Malta Library, in the annals of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, in private deeds held in many notarial archives or at the Public Registry. That however is as far as it goes, and analyzing or obtaining details of such commercial actiVIty, broken down for specific functions, e.g. shopkeeping, servicing activities, agency representations, etc., in the period prior to the 1800's is extremely difficult.
