Abstract: In this newspaper opinion piece, the writer asks questions about the proposed Gozo tunnel. Will the tunnel be safe? How much will the tunnel cost? Who will pay for it? Will the benefits justify the cost? How will the inert waste generated from the tunnel be disposed of? On safety, the EU directive on minimum safety requirements for tunnels cannot be met. On cost, the authorities have come to realise that the 300 million euro initial estimate was completely unrealistic. The usage of the tunnel will not be remotely sufficient to justify the huge costs and the significant risks. There are so many questions that remain unanswered. Given that the ferry service is a viable alternative, the decision to go ahead with the tunnel is reckless and irresponsible.
