dc.description.abstract | Malta’s Classical period and its archaeology have long been neglected in favour of the islands’s unique prehistoric heritage. Anthony Bonanno’s Malta, Phoenician, Punic, and Roman redresses that imbalance. The Phoenicians settled in Malta around the eighth century BC. Their use of writing marked the start of the island’s history, while Malta itself became an important stop on their trade routes. The island’s Phoenician and Punic achievements are placed in their right historical perspective, in the light of the latest archaeological discoveries and of scholarly contributions made both before and since the 1960s when their heritage started to be completely revalued.
