Abstract: The greatest son of Taverna. an ancient town of the province of Catanzaro in the Calabria, was born of the family of Cesare Preti and Innocenza Schipani, on the feast day of St. Matthias, 24 February 1613. The child, baptized two days later in the church of San Martino, belonged to a class of the lesser nobility, and was brought up within a family of six children, with two elder brothers, an artist and a student of jurisprudence, and three sisters, one of whom became a nun.
