Abstract: | In the context of our sculptural heritage the nineteenth century is perhaps remarkable for the relatively large number of religious statues carved by a small group of native- born sculptors. These sculptors tended to derive their inspiration from baroque models and yet as craftsmen they were extremely proficient. At the forefront of the group is Pietro Paolo Azzopardi, a wood carver who was greatly admired by his contemporaries for his technical expertise and the tempered realism of his work. |
