Abstract: George Preca was born on June 25th, 1909. Josef Kalleya remembers him clearly joking boisterously with Hugo Carbonaro (1908 -1979) when they were fellow students at the local School of Art. In those days the School was situated in Old Bakery Street, Valletta at the premises previously housing the Law Courts. George Preca attended art classes when Edward and Robert Caruana Dingli were in charge at the School. He attended the School between 1927-32. In 1932 George Preca was awarded the art course at the Accademia di Belle Arti, in Rome. After succeeding to clinch twice the first place he was awarded the diploma after two years instead of the usual four year course. In 1938 he was elected Press Officer at the Accademia, in Rome.
