Abstract: The War of Spanish Succession broke out because Charles II, King of Spain, had died without issue in 1700. The two strongest claimants; to the vacant throne were the Habsburg Charles VI, the second son of Leopold I of Austria, and the Bourbon Philip V who was the candidate put forward by Louis XIV of France.
