Abstract: Naevius, in a fragment from his pioneer epic called Bellum Poenicum, records the devastations of Malta by a Roman fleet during the course of the First Punic War. The Bellum Poenicun is a patriotic work, of which only fragments survive today. Naevius in fact chose the First Punic War as his theme in order to glorify the power of Rome. Unfortunately, Naevius makes no direct reference to the inhabitants of Malta, nor does he hint at the circumstances which led to the Roman attack on the island. However, the Roman dash for Malta was contemporary to Naevius and the mention of it in his epic is significant enough evidence of the event.
