| Abstract: | Following the exposition of the case, the Inquisitor often made several questions about things and comments which he thought obscure. The most common question was: Why had denouncement been left so late? The answers were various. The most popular answer was: "I never knew I was under obligation to do so". In a case in which superstitions were involved, the Inquisitor also asked questions to see whether the person testifyng was himself or herself a believer in such superstitions. The standard replies were: "I was then blinded by love, so I did not bother to think. Today I know that I was trusting the devil, because God forbids such misdeeds." A man replied: "I believed because I did not bother to reflect upon it and I was living in ignorance. In fact, I should have known that those words could have the desired effect." |
