Abstract: In 1846 or thereabout, the young O.F. Gollcher a native of maritime Sweden together with his brother, a seasoned master mariner arrived in Maltese waters with their Swedish flat ship "Swalan". This fine ship was at that time partly owned by the Gollcher family and was employed mainly on Mediterranean grain and fruit trades. From Swedish ports lifted cargoes of timber, paint and tar or manufactured goods for the markets of the Mediterranean. Our yarn springs from that young Swedish merchant venturer - the yarn of an enterprise known so well in Maltese shipping circles, O.F. Gollcher and Sons or for short Gollcher or the other corrupt versions of the name very often heard along the Valletta waterfront.
