Abstract: The siege of Malta is an epic that is already legendary. Malta's contribution to the Allied cause was considerable, and several British statesmen and Service chiefs have emphasised the Islands' essential role in the crucial phases of World War II. Less known are the economic and social vicissitudes of the country during that period. Yet no understanding of Malta's postwar economy can be had without some insight into the War years.
