Abstract: In 1865 Professor Arthur Issel was visiting the Maltese Islands to study the local geology. While on one of his excursions at Wied Dalam, on the outskirts of Birzebbuga, he passed near a cave half full with field soil in use as a cattle pen. This cave known as Ghar Dalam was only about 50 feet deep, the rest being cut off by a rubble wall reaching the roof. Following some preliminary studies Prof. Issel proposed that excavation of this cave might prove fruitful and of importance. This suggestion opened a new chapter in the Islands' prehistorical and geological past.
