The global financial crisis: A critical analysis from the Maltese banking perspective

Abstract

In this study I investigate the motivations and international trends regarding banking regulation that have led to the development of the financial crisis of 2008. Furthermore, I seek to derive an explanation for the way in which the first wave of repercussions of the financial crisis seem to have overlooked Malta's banking industry and to evaluate the MFSA's performance in the wake of the crisis. Overall, with the limitations of the constraints of this study, findings support the thesis that the MFSA's efforts to encourage a conservative culture into local operating banks have reaped positive results.
