Abstract: Little is known of the history of the theatre in Malta before the 17th Century. It is thought that there was a theatre near the city of Melita, the modern Mdina, in Roman times but the actual site has not been discovered so far. Visitors to the Roman Villa Museum just outside Mdina can see, however, the tombstone of an actor and musician who performed and died in Malta.
