Abstract: This study aims to explore what impact the Internet of Things may have on small and medium enterprises in the local context. This evaluation is being performed in an attempt to establish the extent to which this technology is useful for different organisations with different structures and in different industries. The main objective is to identity any association between these characteristics and IoT, and as a cause identify which type of organisations will this technology have the most impact on. The approach taken in conducting this research is qualitative. This was done by means of one-to one interviews. The participants were all performing in executive roles of Maltese SMEs. The semistructured interviews allowed for the discussion on their views and opinions regarding the subject matter. This was of course done in the context of their respective enterprise. The in-depth analysis of the results establishes that in order for the Internet of Things to have any considerable impact on an SME, said enterprise must be of a certain magnitude and in specific industries, otherwise the effect would be negligible. This research exercise serves as a foundation for this innovative technology within the local context, giving a better understanding of the technology’s and the local businesses’ future direction.
