Euthanasia is deemed to be a highly controversial topic, that is presently being discussed more than ever, on a global level. Throughout the world’s recent history, one could notice a development in the right to choose; when, how and where to die. This right is gradually becoming more socially acceptable and common, even in European member states. The issue of euthanasia, does not merely encompass criminal law or law in general, but also extends into numerous social fields, such as morality and religious beliefs. Having said this, a pan-European approach in this regard is not ideal. This dissertation discusses the introduction of euthanasia in the European Union. It sheds light on the legislative framework of countries, particularly the three Benelux countries. All three countries have a form of euthanasia, which is legal. The rationale behind this dissertation is the belief that the legislation of euthanasia will become the subject of even greater debate, provided that several advances are being made, and will continue to be made in modern medicine. Having said this, clear and strict regulations are to be imposed on the possibility of having different forms of euthanasia, in order to avoid as much as possible cases of abuse.en_GB
