Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyse the current use of digital forensic tools by Maltese gaming companies in order to aid them in the detection, prevention and investigation of fraud and also the potential increase in exposure of such tools within the gaming industry and their benefits. Design: This study was conducted with the help of semi-structured interviews with Gaming Companies’ fraud analysts, Managers from the Risk, Fraud and Payments Departments and also CEOs and COOs. Secondary research was also conducted in relation with this study. Findings: Results showed that digital forensic tools are being used by some gaming companies although very few. From their experience with digital forensic tools gaming companies confirmed that they have facilitated the detection and mitigation of fraud and money laundering. Although the benefits digital forensic tools posses there is still some reluctance towards implementing such tools. The major reasons found for such reluctance are that they are expensive so there needs to be proper justification for their investment. There are other things that influence how gaming companies perform their procedure to detect, prevent and investigate fraud, some of which are the new data protection law, the gaming licenses they hold and the 4th Anti-Money Laundering directive. Conclusions: Although gaming operators find it difficult and challenging to take that step and resort to digital forensic tools all agreed that automation is the new step for them. The Gaming Industry has been growing rapidly and all understand that the change and enhancement in their procedures would be beneficial for them. Value: With massive advancements in technology there are always new risks which e-commerce need to deal with to safeguard their business one of which are the gaming companies. There is no reason to fear these advancements however to prevent themselves from any risks this study brings light to the necessity of digital forensic tools within gaming companies to combat fraud and money laundering.
