dc.description.abstract | The issues that fall under the broad title of this seminar - Bioethics - are vast and with many implications, both for concerned scientists and also for all responsible citizens. Within this very broad field, the seminar will be focusing more particularly on the topic of Ethics Committees as a means towards the establishment of responsibilities and norms for those involved in healthcare - a practical issue consequent upon bioethical reflection. I do not, however, intend in this opening intervention to make any comments on this topic from the point of view of the Government. This is not, I hasten to reassure you because of any lack of interest in the topic. As you can see from the personal involvement by different Ministers in the seminar, your reflections and recommendations will certainly be taken into serious account by the Government. I decided, however, that I should rather myself broach with you a proposal in the broader field of bioethics that we are seriously considering putting up for discussion in appropriate international fora. I hope that I will thus stimulate dialogue and debate both on the topic itself and on the advisability of the proposed action, as well as keep open the broad perspective within which the question of Ethics Committees is to be considered. | en_GB |
