dc.description.abstract | The aim of this dissertation is to study the social, political and cultural dimensions of life on the Maltese islands in the mid-eighteenth century. This is done through an examination of the acts of Notary Camillo Gonzi. This dissertation is split into three main chapters. The first chapter starts with a general overview of how the work of a notary developed throughout the centuries. An analysis of the notarial volume is made regarding details about how the manuscript is composed and the different clientele who used the notary‟s services. Another part is dedicated to a study of the international context in regards to how it influenced Malta under the Order of St John. The second chapter is based on the economic sector of Malta and Gozo. The acts help us to understand from which trades and resources the Maltese were getting their daily incomes. Court disputes are also present in this chapter. These vary from disputes regarding financial agreements which were not respected and other litigations due to disagreement regarding wills. These uncover precious information about social practises. The third chapter focuses on the social sphere of the island. Marriage contracts are essential to compare and contrast the different possessions of each family. The Roman Catholic institution during those times played an important part in shaping the cultural norms of society. Religion intervened in various events of the Maltese inhabitants. Priests represented different parts of society in front of Notary Gonzi. In addition, the acts show us some intricate practises by priests. | en_GB |
