Hal Qormi : a comparison between the two parishes during the 19th and 20th century

Abstract

When I had to decide on what theme my dissertation should be, Qormi immediately came to mind. However, since it was already done by a previous university student, I had to come up with a new topic concerning the same place. With the help of my tutor, Dr. Simon Mercieca, we came up with the subject title, Hal Qormi: A comparison between the two parishes from 19th till 20th century. Considering that I live in Qormi, I was very eager to research on the topic and form dissertation. As indicated in the name, the dissertation gives a comparison of the two parishes of Qormi, which are Saint Sebastian and Saint George, from the 19th century up till the 20th century. This is an extended period of time that unfortunately it would be impossible for me to include every detail. Consequently, my tutor, Dr. Simon Mercieca, advised me to focus on demography issues, urban growth and how they impacted on politics and ecclesiastical history in the locality. This means that these studies looked at the civil and religious boundaries as well as the political alliances. I would like to seize the opportunity and acknowledge all the individuals who assisted me in producing my dissertation. Primarily, I would like to thank my tutor, Dr. Simon Mercieca, Senior lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, whose perpetual assistance and diligence were crucial in the process of doing my dissertation. Moreover, I would like to give thanks to the Department of History within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta and its lecturers who taught me for these past 3 years. In addition, I would like to show gratitude to the staff of the University library, in particular the staff of the Melitensia.
