Abstract: | Scuba diving is not only a sport, but a niche sector contributing to Malta’s tourism product. It entails the use of marine environment while attracting geo tourists from around the world. Moreover, competing with many attractive destinations to the likes of Egypt, Maldives, Cyprus and so on. Hence, this study sets out to explore the position this niche market occupies and how it can be enhanced. Furthermore, sustainable cautions have been heightened especially in the tourism industry where mass tourism has dominated. Thus, examining the legislations, enforcement and regulations present regarding diving and in its subsidiary sectors such as fishing and anchoring. To achieve such, the researcher adapts a qualitative approach as depicted in the methodology chapter, where interviews with stakeholders shape up the current situation. Alongside, the secondary research conducted noting the evolution and arising interest of sustainability and exploring the implications on the environment and effects of diving. Additionally, considering Malta’s products noting boat and shore dive sites entailing their management and conservation. Findings expressed that more laws are needed especially regarding protection of fish which the industry highly depends on. Respectively, in laws and regulations present, enforcement is perceived insufficient. Hence, a representative body in charge of such is proposed. Alike, dive sites also concluded of a needed renovation and standardisation in the latter, as at present, only Cirkewwa portrays success in this matter. Such is beneficial as more sites can be utilised all year round and moreover, help the spread of tourists and not over exploit a certain site. Scuba diving has increased in participants from all over the world. Therefore, researcher believes that if more sustainable awareness and investments towards this industry are granted, Malta’s total tourism will benefit by setting examples to other niches. |
