Introduction The use of the erect abdominal radiograph for the investigation of an acute abdomen had been questioned long time ago. Objectives The purpose of the study was to evaluate the use and diagnostic value of the erect abdominal radiograph as a first line investigation at an Emergency Department in a general hospital in Malta. An additional aim was that to assess the need of a protocol for its use. Methodology The research design used for this study is a triangulation of methodologies blending qualitative and quantitative data to provide a broader and deeper perspective of the use of the erect abdominal radiograph in diagnosing an acute abdomen. Results The results indicate that there is no significant diagnostic information which would be achieved by performing an erect abdominal radiograph in addition to the supine view and an erect chest x-ray. From comparison with results of similar, previously performed studies it is suggested that its routine use should be abandoned. Conclusion The researcher put forward a number of conclusions and recommendations based on the findings of the study on the necessity or removal of the erect abdominal radiograph in diagnosing acute abdomen.en_GB
