History, conservation and restoration of the statue of the Immaculate Conception at Cospicua

Abstract

The team of Atelier del Restauro recently completed the conservation and restoration of the titular statue of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary of Cospicua's collegiate church, which is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Il-Kuncizzjoni). As the project sought to conserve and recover the statue's original artistic value, the team adopted a conservative approach to address the work of art not only from an aesthetic point of view but first and foremost from the materials composing the statue. Throughout the project, the sculpture's historical, social, religious and aesthetic values were taken into consideration.
