An in-depth research of the meaning behind masculinity and its role in society, exhibited through image and sound

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the early origins of the word ‘masculine’ by delving into the historical, psychological and social aspects that give a better understanding to its meaning. This study looks at gender identity, in search of an explanation to how society created a binary division between both sexes. The aim is to highlight the diverse interpretations of what it feels to be masculine and to embrace self-expression by eliminating unrealistic gender segregation. In support of this, in-depth interviews were carried out to collect data from different men across a wide age spectrum. For the final work, this information was recorded and combined with a series of photographs of each participant. The goal was to present the different experiences of manliness, by means of environmental portraits and sound.
