Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the early origins of the word ‘masculine’ by delving into the historical, psychological and social aspects that give a better understanding to its meaning. This study looks at gender identity, in search of an explanation to how society created a binary division between both sexes. The aim is to highlight the diverse interpretations of what it feels to be masculine and to embrace self-expression by eliminating unrealistic gender segregation. In support of this, in-depth interviews were carried out to collect data from different men across a wide age spectrum. For the final work, this information was recorded and combined with a series of photographs of each participant. The goal was to present the different experiences of manliness, by means of environmental portraits and sound.
