The modern day world has seen an increase in the human trafficking industry. The actual figures are only the tip of an iceberg as these indicate only those victims who were officially reported to the UNODC. The true scale of human trafficking is unknown as the majority of cases often go unreported. As a result, ways of tackling trafficking in human beings has commanded increasing international attention over the past years. This dissertation is concerned with this issue as it aims to provide a critical analysis of The Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, adopted in 2000, and to determine those areas where the Protocol has been considered a success and where it is considered to have failed. Furthermore, this dissertation also provides a number of suggestions in an attempt to improve any shortcomings in the current Protocol, in order to ensure optimal treatment of the victims of human trafficking.en_GB
