The Institute of Linguistics of the University of Malta was founded in 1988 and is committed to teaching and research within the areas of General, Applied and Computational Linguistics. Its mission is also to promote collaboration and interdisciplinary research that cuts across departmental and faculty boundaries. The Institute plays an important role in fostering awareness of language disability and spearheading cooperative initiatives leading to research and its applications in the local context. It also continues to actively develop international contacts with fellow academics as well as universities and educational institutions abroad. The Institute of Linguistics offers three undergraduate programmes: a B.A. and B.A. Honours in General Linguistics, a B.Sc. in Human Language Technology and a B.A. in Language Technology. At the postgraduate level, it runs an M.Sc. in Language and Computation as well as the research-focused M.A. in Linguistics and Ph.D. in Linguistics programmes. It also hosts the Academic English programme.
