Abstract: The Chicago-type wind-driven water pumps have been utilized for many years in the rural areas of Malta to draw water from the aquifer for irrigation purposes. Many of these pumps still exist across Malta and Gozo. The Maltese Government, in tandem with the University of Malta represented by the Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Faculty of Engineering, have worked together for the last few years on the design, construction and testing of a small multi-bladed wind turbine. The aim of this collaboration was to design, construct and test a new Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) to generate electricity.
